Herbal medicine
Why herbal medicine?
Herbal medicine is the use of whole plants or plant extracts to get your body to make itself better – the body generally has amazing abilities to heal itself. Herbalists use herbs creatively as teas, alcohol extractions called tinctures, creams, salves and joint rubs, and you can incorporate them into your food, as in nettle soup or omlette!
Herbalists work with other health professionals to get the best outcome for you – Herbal medicine has an outstanding safety record. Herbalists grow or source high quality medicines. We are trained in any herb/drug interactions and work in a collaborative way with other health practitioners – get the best of both.
How does it work?
Most pharmaceutical medicines today are extracted from or based on plant phytochemical structures, such as digoxin (Foxglove), asprin (White willow bark) and opiates (Poppy). You yourself use more herbs than you think: Chamomile tea to sleep, Lavender as a relaxing bath, Rosemary and Sage to help digest your roast dinner…. A trained herbalist can help target herbs in the right combination and at the right dose to help a person with serious and/or complex conditions. Herbal medicine treats the person, not the disease, and looks in a holistic way at all aspects of your life that could impact on your health.
What is a herbalist?
After six years of study I qualified as a Registered and Accredited Medical Herbalist, and became a member of the main governing body: the National Institute of Medical Herbalists (NIMH). 15 years further on and I’m still just as passionate about health and happiness in the context of the natural world, connecting plants and people.
Herbal medicine has many aspects: I am an empathetic caring listener, consulting with patients and offering individual effective prescriptions. I’m a tutor at the School of Herbal Medicine in Somerset and also teach on a years’ course I co-developed with a colleague: ‘Herbal Wisdom’, and give foraging workshops locally. I’m also an ITEC level2 Sports massage therapist.

She was able to come up with a thorough treatment plan for me which involved an initial chat about my symptoms and the kinds of experiences I was having.
A year on and I can honestly say that these tinctures have been incredibly helpful and I have noticed a significant difference in my emotional a physical wellbeing when taking them”.
